Aspirations and Goals for Everyone

Aspirations and Goals - Follow Your Passion... Live Your Purpose What Are Aspirations and How Do They Differ from Goals?

Do you have hopes and dreams? Do you have an ambition to achieve a life goal in the future? You have aspirations. These big picture life goals give us a sense of purpose and direction as we live out each day. Don’t be mistaken. Having aspirations and goals are not the same thing.

Goals are action steps to get you to a final destination, while aspirations tend to be more general and long-term future focused. Think of it this way, when you want to look back on your career and know you met all your goals, that is an aspiration. Obtaining a new position within six months is a goal. They work together, but they have separate functions.

My Early Aspirations

When I was a child, my aspirations included dreams of becoming a veterinarian. I imagined myself healing animals, giving them comfort, and making the world safer for every creature I loved. But the truth revealed itself early: while my heart was big enough for all the animals, it was too tender to withstand their suffering.

I remember the first time I tried to nurse a sick parrot back to health. I sat by its cage for hours, whispering encouragement, offering food and water, willing it to get better. When it didn’t, I felt crushed—and I realized that the daily reality of veterinary life would mean experiencing that heartbreak again and again.

It was the same with my dogs. Each time one limped with an injury or grew old with time, my instinct was to comfort them, not to remain detached and clinical. My cats, too, taught me something about limits. They would curl up in my lap as if to say, “Just love me. That’s enough.” And it was.

Even the more unusual pets in my life—like the toucans with their mischievous beaks, the snakes who longed for a human’s touch, or the chimpanzee who had an almost human sense of humor—showed me that animals are not simply patients waiting to be healed. They are companions, teachers, and friends.

So I chose another path. Instead of becoming a veterinarian, I became a teacher and, later, a writer. In those roles, I could nurture, encourage, and inspire others without the weight of animal suffering on my shoulders. Yet, I’ve always kept animals close. My home has been filled with barks, meows, slithers, squawks, and laughter, reminding me every day why I once dreamed of being their doctor.

In the end, my animals guided me toward my true calling. They taught me that while I might not heal them in the medical sense, I could still create a life full of care, compassion, and meaning—with them always by my side.

A Breakdown of Aspirations

Having aspirations gives your life more meaning and focus. There are various types that we lean on when we start dreaming of our future. People have different outlooks on what their aspirations are. Some are simple, such as being a steady provider for their family. Others aim higher to become famous or rich.

Researchers have discerned there are two main types of aspirations we aim for – intrinsic and extrinsic. They are centered on common themes that can indicate our sense of purpose. Here is the breakdown between the two kinds to help you in determining what types of aspirations you tend to focus on:

  1. Intrinsic: These are the aspirations that satisfy your need to enhance your well-being. Typically, they are centered on relationships, contributions to community, health, and personal growth. For example, you may aspire to make friends, build relationships, and volunteer for a good cause. This would be considered a social aspiration. Other examples include building a family (family aspirations) or developing new skills such as in music or art (skill aspirations).
  2. Extrinsic: This variety includes achieving an instrumental outcome. If you want to be seen as physically attractive, wealthy, or popular, then you are aiming for extrinsic aspirations. When you were growing up, did you want a million dollars? That is a financial aspiration. In high school, did you want to be popular? You may have had popularity goals.

What about career aspirations? Many of us hope to accomplish certain things within our careers that are both intrinsic and extrinsic. They are often tied to our desire to have a certain image or salary, but they can also have bits of personal growth and community contributions mixed in.

The Difference Between Aspirations and Goals

Aspirations and Goals - Is There a Difference?

Aspirations are big-picture dreams, visions, or desires for your life. They are long-term, often broad, and sometimes not fully measurable. Aspirations guide your direction and give meaning.

Example: “I aspire to live a life where I care for animals and help others.”

Goals are specific, concrete steps you can take to move toward your aspirations. They are measurable, actionable, and often time-bound. Goals turn aspirations into reality through structure and progress.

Example: “I will complete a degree in veterinary science within six years.” or “I will write 500 words every day for my book.”

* I Think of aspirations as the “North Star” – where you’re headed.
* I Think of goals as the stepping-stones—the actions you take to get there.

My aspiration as a child was to devote my life to animals. But as I grew and learned more about myself, my goals shifted —toward teaching, writing, and surrounding yourself with pets, which still fulfilled the deeper aspiration of love, care, and connection.

Over the years I’ve had many pets, each one teaching me lessons in patience, loyalty, and unconditional love. In a way, they’ve been my silent partners in this journey, reminding me daily why that childhood dream was so strong in the first place.

Examples of Life Aspirations and Goals

Sometimes we group goals and aspirations together. While they may provide similar purposes, they are not the same. You might consider aspirations as lifelong dreams that are broad in scope. They can take you a lifetime to accomplish, or they may morph along the way. They help you make decisions in your day-to-day life.

Goals are the action steps you take to achieve your aspirations. They tend to center on the short term. Putting your lifelong achievements into words helps when you better understand the different types and see some examples.

Types of Life Aspirations

Aspirations are grouped under general categories. Sometimes they overlap, but you may notice that you gravitate to one of four kinds. As you review these, consider where you are in life now and how you would like to wind up:

  1. Self-Development: Some people determine never to stop growing as a person. They accomplish this through learning new skills, reading books, or traveling. Some strive to become more creative, so they take a photography class or whatever helps them live out their creativity.
  2. Career Aspirations: You might seek out new positions within your existing company. Many aim to become entrepreneurs. Some want to start an online business and travel. These aspirations can be attained by increasing your productivity skills, learning better conflict resolution tactics, and growing from your experiences.
  3. Family Success: For some, having a loving family is the ultimate mark of success. You might focus on learning better communication skills to use with your spouse. Learning to forgive and let go of the past will take you far in family success. Even volunteering for your child’s ball team shows your commitment to your loved ones.
  4. Overall Personal Life: Some find that pigeon-holing themselves into one category means they may not be successful in other areas. Instead, they choose to focus on comprehensive personal growth. That means they may choose to increase their willpower to make better health decisions and live longer for their family. Some will spend time learning new habits to get a better job that is more emotionally rewarding. In turn, other aspects of their life, such as their stress levels, are made much better.

Instead of wandering through life, why not think about where you want to be? Living up to your aspirations gives you the roadmap needed to accomplish anything you can imagine.

Does Having Aspirations and Goals Matter?

As a kid, did you dream about being a police officer, astronaut, or computer game programmer? If so, you had long-term hopes that influenced everything you did, from the television shows you watched to the classes you took in school. Without those aspirations, you may have felt like you were floundering in the choppy seas called life.

Many people go through life without a real feeling of accomplishment or end goals. They graduate high school, maybe go to college, and enter adulthood with all its responsibilities. Without having a sense of a bigger purpose to guide them, they may feel hopeless and develop mental health issues, such as depression.

Why Having Aspirations Matters

Your life makes a difference when you have lifelong dreams. Having a long-term goal in mind gives you a roadmap for your life. It gives you hope when things go askew. Here is why:

  1. They Help You Figure Out the ‘Why’ in Your Life: Why do you go to the same job every day? Why did you choose to get a degree in biology? When you answer similar questions, you are developing your aspirations. Your answers may take you into a new area of your career or family life. You will start finding your purpose.
  2. They Guide Your Life and Career Choices: As you determine the type of person you want to be or the type of career you want, your dreams will guide your decisions. For example, you may end toxic relationships. You may take a new position or turn down a promotion based on where you see yourself later in life.
  3. They Motivate You: Let’s say you have children and hope one day to have grandchildren. Yet, you are overweight and struggle to keep up with your kids. If you dream that you will be an active grandmother, you will find ways to change your life now to get healthier. You will have the motivation to enhance your life.
  4. You Become Self-Aware: Being self-aware keeps you in touch with your feelings and helps you make better life decisions. You will learn what brings you inner peace and happiness. You will pursue those goals that are intrinsically rewarding, too.

Aspirations for New Online Entrepreneurs & Marketers

Aspirations are the big-picture dreams — the why behind the business. They might include:

  • Freedom: The aspiration to work from anywhere and create time freedom.

  • Impact: Wanting to help others, share knowledge, or improve people’s lives.

  • Financial independence: Building a business that provides consistent income, perhaps replacing a job.

  • Creative expression: Having the freedom to write, teach, design, or create content that reflects who they are.

  • Legacy: Leaving something meaningful — a book, course, or community — that outlives them.

Aspirations answer the question: “What do I want my life and business to stand for?”

Goals for New Online Entrepreneurs & Marketers

Goals are the measurable, concrete actions that turn aspirations into reality. For example:

  • Build an email list of 500 subscribers within the next 90 days.

  • Publish one blog post per week for the next six months.

  • Create and launch a mini-course by the end of the year.

  • Make the first $1,000 in affiliate commissions in the next 120 days.

  • Post three times per week on social media to build an engaged audience.

  • Attend one online networking event each month to make connections.

Goals answer the question: “What can I accomplish in the next 30–180 days to move toward my aspiration?”

Avoid chasing the wind. Take time to think about your life now and how you want it to be in the future. Soon, you will find yourself in a much more rewarding place as you work on your aspirations and goals.
