Your How? Why? and When? are of Great Importance
This morning, I spent over an hour in quiet and thoughtful contemplation, thinking about my life up to this point and the future I am creating for myself going forward.
My Why? began during 2004, while I was a classroom teacher and also working part-time as a real estate Broker and residential Appraiser. I had fallen at school while standing on a sink and attempting to hang up a poster in my classroom.
This led to surgery, four months of being on Worker’s Compensation, and missing my students terribly. Then I was diagnosed with cancer, throwing me off balance even more.
I prayed for a way to make it through this time. I asked God for work that I could do from home, from my bedroom, if necessary that would allow me to meet all of my financial needs and to be able to continue helping my elderly mother supplement her meager retirement check.
The answer came quickly. I attended an evening seminar where someone talked about having an online business and creating products and courses. I had no idea if I could do this, but I was ready to find out the details. Obviously, this works, and very well.
Do you remember when you were a young child, and you honestly believed you could do anything? It was so much fun, until you fell on your bicycle, broke something special, or discovered that your tomato plant had been eaten by something – perhaps aliens?! – during the night.
Then you felt sad and discouraged and gave up on the things that interested you and made you smile. If there wasn’t someone to pick you up, dust you off, and encourage you to start again by showing you HOW to do it right, these feelings followed you into adulthood. I hope you know that you can do anything!
It’s the same with starting an online business, outlining a book, and creating products and courses to sell. Above, I talked about the importance of knowing your Why? Now let’s look at the How?…
I honestly believed that it would be simple for me to set up a website and sell a simple product to begin earning income in 2006. It wasn’t. Even though I had been thought of as the “computer person” at the school where I was teaching, in the online space it was a very different type of technology.
The old me was ready to give up; the new me searched for a solution. That showed up when I connected with a Mentor who promised to show me how to put all the pieces together.
During my 20 years online, I have always had a Mentor. These days, I have a few Mentors for the different parts of my life and business: marketing, content creation, health and wellness, artificial intelligence, and fiction writing. This is how I am able to improve in all of these areas, and increase my income year over year.
Timing is Everything: How Your “When?” Comes into Play
Knowing when you are ready to make a change in your life is crucial to your success. I’ve talked about knowing your “Why?” and your “How?” over the past two days, and now let’s discuss your “When?”
I had wanted to do something online for a few months when I had lunch with a friend who is a successful business owner. I told him about wanting to start an online business so I could work from home, and he asked me two questions.
“Do you know how you’re going to get this new business off the ground?” I told him that I was sure that I could figure it out, because so many other people were already doing it. He raised his eyebrows at me, but didn’t make a comment.
“How do you know this is the right time for you to resign from your teaching job and to no longer work part-time in real estate?” I did not know if it was the right time and told him so. He leaned in and shared his thoughts on this with me…
“You told me you have enough money saved to cover your expenses for a full year. I know that you do not have anyone under 18 that you are responsible for. And, I believe this time you won’t give up and quit like you’ve done with other things you’ve started.”
Our eyes met and my face was hot. He was right. But I was now about to turn 50 and I knew I had to make some serious changes in my life. “I promise. This time will be different.” He smiled and we changed the subject. And he was sure proud of me when my online business began to take off a couple of months later.
