Journaling to make sense of your life experience makes perfect sense, if you take the time to think about it and get started. If you only have your thoughts and memories to guide you through your life, most of those will evaporate into thin air over time.
My memory is pretty good, but over the years I find that I have remembered some events and conversations very differently than they actually occurred.
Perhaps you’ve fallen into a journaling rut, or maybe you’re thinking of starting a journaling practice for the first time, or again after a long absence.
I identify as both a writer and an entrepreneur. Maintaining a daily journal is crucial for both entrepreneurs and authors because it provides a structured outlet for reflection, creativity, and clarity. Here’s why it’s particularly important…
For Entrepreneurs…
You want clarity in you decision-making, and journaling will help you to process complex thoughts, set priorities, and evaluate strategies.
Having your own business can be extremely stressful, and writing down your worries can reduce your stress and provide emotional relief.

It’s so easy to start out a project with enthusiasm. When something is brand new, there’s just so much to explore. Unfortunately, as time goes by, we figure out what sort of works, and after a while tend to gravitate toward doing the same old thing over and over.
This is especially true in journaling. But while there’s nothing wrong with making posts with the same sort of template day after day, after a while it can seem kind of boring. It’s when you get into this kind of routine where it can become extremely easy to start skipping entries, or worse, quitting altogether. After all, if there’s nothing new to say, what’s the point?
The answer to this problem is simple. With a little bit of thought, you can create fresh and interesting entries every single day. You might even start looking forward to journaling again, the way you did when it was all brand new. Let’s look at some of these ideas:
Positive Charge
Sometimes what we really need is a boost to help change our attitude toward life. The energy from this will also supercharge your journal. To get a quick buzz of positive energy, take a moment to write about the most positive thing which happened to you so far today. It can be something big or small. Write about why this felt so good to you.
Check Your Goals
Have you been using your journal to keep track of goals? If so, now would be a great time to do a check in and see where you are in reaching them. What progress have you made so far this week? What can you plan to do tomorrow which will get you a little closer to where you want to be?
Tout Your Successes
Have you achieved anything worthy of note lately? What about making milestones toward your goal? What about good deeds performed, accolades received, or even just a thank you from someone else which meant something special to you? Talk about your latest success. Feel free to go into detail. These are the kinds of posts which are nice to come back to and enjoy all over again.
What About Your Failures?
Has something gone wrong lately in your life? While it’s not always fun to write about failure, there are always lessons to be learned when something doesn’t quite work out. Try analyzing something which went wrong to see if you can figure out what happened. What can you do differently next time? What new idea does this failure give you?
Have You Made a List Lately?
While it’s not a great idea to stuff your journal full of To-Do lists and schedules (unless this is the normal focus of your journal) the occasional list can be a way to jump start a journal which is becoming stagnant. Make a list of 2 or 3 goals for the day (or for tomorrow if you’re doing this in the evening). Be sure to check back later and tell how you did in meeting these goals.
Figure Out Where Things Went Wrong
If you haven’t written in your journal for a while and are hoping to jump start it, why not start with a post examining the scene of the crime, so to speak. What did you write about last? Why did you stop there? What happened which kept you away from your journal? Is this something which needs to be resolved? Or were you simply that bored with the old journal? If you really just lost enthusiasm, see if you can find out what about journaling felt tedious or dull. What can you do differently this time to make it more interesting?
Is Your Life in Balance?
It’s hard to keep writing in a journal if you’re feeling pulled in too many directions at once. Why not write a post about what you feel you need to do in a day? How does this take away from time for yourself? Make a list of ways you take care of yourself. Have you been able to do many of those things lately? Sometimes seeing things on paper can help you to see unhealthy patterns or trends. Write about something nice you want to do for yourself. Follow through by doing what you write about and then make another post about how it felt to take some ‘you time.’
How’s Your Financial Sense?
If you’re having money issues, your journal can be a great place to track how you’re spending your money and to make goals for saving. Be sure to give yourself a pat on the back if you’ve achieved any financial goals lately.
Pick a Different Time to Write
Have you been trying to write at a specific time of day? If so, is there something about this time of day which isn’t working for you? At the end of the day, you might be too tired to write. At the beginning you might be groggy, especially if you’re not a morning person. Try switching your writing time to something else. Don’t be afraid to experiment.
Write Down Some of Your Ideas
It’s said the more we write down our ideas, the more ideas we’ll have to write down. Try writing down a brand-new idea today. If you can, build this number up over the next few days until you can get to where you come up with ideas easily. Be warned: Once you start the ideas flowing, you’re going to want to keep your journal with you, so you don’t miss any of them. Make a practice of writing down your ideas as they occur to you, so you don’t lose any of them as you are journaling to make sense of your life experience.
Start Small and Build to More Momentum
If you’re really having trouble getting going again, make a smaller goal. Don’t expect to write a long post every time you sit down. Even one sentence can be enough. If this still doesn’t inspire you, try drawing something small instead. A doodle can be very inspiring. Or a few words of poetry. What about writing down your favorite quote?
Try Using a Different Journal
Is there something you dislike about writing in your current journal? Sometimes having the wrong book can make journaling to make sense of your life, or for any other reason excruciating. Go shopping for a book you can truly enjoy. If you want something which lays flat, try using a three-ring binder and some loose-leaf paper or a spiral-bound book. If writing by hand is painful, switch out to journaling on your computer or using voice software. There are even apps you can try. You have to do what works for you.
Change Things Up to Keep It Creative and Interesting
What about a different journaling style? If you really want to get creative, try keeping an art journal for a while. Or even just grab some paints or markers to make things more colorful. Try writing an entry as a letter to someone. Or use bullet points if you haven’t used them before. There are so many options for how you journal. It can be a lot of fun and inspire all sorts of new thoughts when you mix things up and do your journal differently for a bit. Who knows, you might even discover your new favorite journaling style this way!
Find a Partner to Share Your Journal Entries
If you really want to build a journaling habit and need help getting your writing done daily, an accountability partner might help. Find a friend who doesn’t mind checking in with you occasionally. Remember, turnabout is fair play. Maybe you can even do the same for them!
Go Somewhere Else
Sometimes boredom with journaling comes from being in the same place all the time. It’s easy to be inspired when you’re somewhere new. Try going outside, or to your favorite coffee shop to write. Let the ambience of where you are act as inspiration for your next entry.
Use Your Other (Non-Dominate) Hand
If you write your journal by hand, by putting your pen in the other hand you’ll have to focus hard on every word you write. This kind of thoughtful writing could be very interesting, especially when you give yourself up to enjoying the experience without worrying about how messy or strange the handwriting looks. Keeping in mind the non-dominant side of your brain is in control of your ‘off’ hand, take note of what thoughts this writing triggers. You might be surprised.
Create Some Ambience
What does your journaling routine look like? If normally you just sit down to write, this might be part of the problem. Create a ritual or even an environment for writing. Grab a favorite beverage, grab some soft music, and write by candlelight if it helps. Or take your journal on a hike and sit somewhere in the sun to write where you can enjoy nature at its finest. Whatever routine you create, make it so pleasurable you can’t wait to write.
