You’re the Hero of Your Life Story
Today, let’s talk about heroes, in relation to habits and routines. You are the hero of your own life story! Have you ever thought about yourself in this way? As a hero, you will have defined primary and secondary goals, unavoidable and seemingly impossible obstacles to overcome, and the stakes will be high if you do not achieve your goals.
What About Superheroes?
My favorite character is Batman. He always knows the right thing to say in any given situation. He’s always prepared. He takes on people that are bigger than him, stronger than him, have alien powers.
But more than anything, Batman has determination. When there’s something that he needs then he’ll use any kind of resource. He’ll out think anybody. He’ll talk and manipulate his way around his situation. He can really compete with the strongest people just based on sheer determination.
YOU are the Hero You’ve Been Waiting for…
There’s something about us that loves an underdog, somebody who can press on or veer against all odds.In school, I always cheered for the underdog because that was the person with whom I felt a connection with most often. I don’t think I ever had a conversation with any of these people, or even with anyone else of the topic of heroes, and especially around the concept of being the hero of your life story. But these days I’m focused and clear on my goals and intentions and this concept is top of mind for me.
When I started my online business in 2006, I was forced to go from being someone who had always wanted to write, to writing and publishing mediocre articles and blog posts, to becoming a self-published author, to authoring even more titles around the topics of entrepreneurship, authorship, marketing online, and mindset. Then something magical occurred…
I finally became a writer in the truest sense of the word. I write every day because I have to write to feel like I am fully alive. I’ve manifested this life because of my writing. This is what drives me to write in a way that allows me to share the stories, both factual, non-fiction, and everything in between with readers and followers all over the world.
When you’re writing, you can often feel like you are combating extreme odds, because the publishing field, especially self-publishing, is so massive that it’s hard to keep a sense of yourself and to stay on target, and stay on schedule.
That is hard. It’s a challenge, but it’s one of the things that separates the authors (people who publish books to promote themselves and their businesses; what I did initially) from the writers (those who write because they have to write, and in the process learn that you are the hero of your life story) in our world. I prefer to drill down into the details of every burden and hurdle in a writer’s life, from naming my characters and designing their story arcs to creating seriously awesome writing in a variety of learning modes and formats that will be seen by thousands of people at a time. This requires each of us to become a hero, and in wrapping your mind around this idea and concept of being the hero of your life story a new YOU emerges triumphant!
I’ll use myself as an example here… In 2006 I was working as a classroom teacher, as well as a real estate broker and residential appraiser part-time. I was exhausted from my schedule and feeling like I needed to change my life completely in order to change my circumstances.
My goal was to be able to work from home and meet all of my financial obligations with grace and ease. So, I resigned my teaching position and gave away my best real estate clients to others who could better serve them. I cashed out my retirement savings and sat down in front of my computer.
I’d love to say everything went my way from the first day, but the truth is that I had very little idea of what it would take to become successful as an online entrepreneur. The writing and the technology were so difficult for me. And I had turned 50 and believed my age and health issues would keep me from getting another job if I failed. If I couldn’t have begun to earn some income and finally replace what I’d brought in previously, I would have lost my home and been unable to help my elderly mother. In addition, I would’ve been humiliated and would have had to find some way to start my life over.
Of course, I’m leaving out many details but you can see that I had to find a way to make everything fall into place. And I did! And you already know how I did this… I created habits and routines around the things I needed to do each day.
I created a schedule and routine for each day and…
- scheduled two hours each morning for writing
- joined a Mastermind to learn about marketing
- began to think of myself as a creative person and created simple products and courses
- devoted 5 hours each week to learning what I needed in order to move forward
- overcame my introverted personality and found ways to network with others
Soon, the money began to trickle in to my bank account from recommending the people, products, books, and courses I was sharing with my growing online community through an affiliate link. Next, some of what I was taking action with brought me clients and customers for my own products, courses, and mentoring programs I was developing. Then, I gained some confidence and took more chances with my marketing.
Less than a year and a half later, I’d replaced my previous income and kept growing. These days, I couldn’t stop or even slow down the income, even if I wanted to… and I don’t want the money to stop flowing!
Are you now understanding that you are the hero of your life story? Can you do what I did by setting up habits and routines? Yes! Simply begin where you are right now, write down where you’d like to be, and get moving. Have fun with this part of your life experience.
I use my writing practice as a way to express my gratitude for and forgiveness of others I encounter in my life. When things bother me, sometimes for reasons I can’t put into words, it’s in the writing that I learn and grow and evolve and heal. Perhaps it will be the same for you, if not now then in the near future.
I’m Connie Ragen Green, the hero of my life story. I want you to think about and take action on being the hero of your life story in a way that will not only change your life, but the lives of every person you touch.
