Too many of us run our businesses in survival mode. It doesn’t start out that way, but we soon find ourselves being reactive, struggling to stay on top of all the things we’re told we should be doing. Distractions bombard us from all sides. One of the most frustrating and common syndromes is where you find yourself perpetually trying to use a new tool, or take a new course, and never having time to really learn it or take advantage of all its promises.
And then there are distractions such as email or Facebook. But if it was just a matter of managing social interactions better or avoiding bright, shiny objects, we would still see only limited improvement. When you feel stuck in your business and you aren’t making anywhere near the income you want to make, a few quick fixes aren’t what you need: You need a radical paradigm shift.
What we’re talking about is finding a completely different way of thinking, so that we don’t waste time attempting to solve our money lack in the same old way. If you do that—if you’re focusing on trying to “fix” something—you’re focusing on the negative. You’re in punitive mode with yourself, and that doesn’t create positive energy or spark vibrant creativity: Instead, attempting to repair perennial problems drains and discourages.
Trying to “fix” the way you run your business is usually about focusing on the negative. It’s like trying to fix a broken pair of eye-glasses with adhesive tape, when that particular pair of glasses wasn’t even your correct prescription in the first place. When you wear them, you can’t tell if that dot in the distance is a tree or person. You can’t read what is right in front of you on the page.
If that happened in real life, you wouldn’t waste your time messing around cleaning those glasses or trying to reattach a broken stem with adhesive tape, would you? You’d go to the optician and get your eyes tested, then order a brand new pair with your unique prescription. In funky colors that you like! And you’d be amazed at how clear things become, once you slip that new, custom pair on.
So, what you need is a brand-new pair of cosmic eye-glasses: One that will let you see the big picture clearly—as well as all the details. Only then will you be able to see your path in a totally new and empowering, exciting way. And when you see things clearly, you’ll finally be able to focus.
Get Specific with the Universe
Focus is what allows us to get specific with the universe. If we don’t know what we really want, we can’t head toward it. We’ll just continue chasing our own tails every day, over and over.
Without focus, our goals are really just daydreams or wishes: And the thing about daydreams and wishes is that they usually stay there, up in the clouds. Out of reach. It’s not like there’s a blueprint to guide you.
This happened with me when I made the conscious decision to sharpen my writing skills and become a professional writer.
There’s a hidden element to daydreams and wishes that most people don’t understand. Daydreams reinforce helplessness. Wishes give away power. “I wish I was wealthy” is a message to yourself that your subconscious and every cell in your body interprets more like this: “I want to be wealthy but I believe I have no power to make it happen.”
Wishing and hoping and daydreaming is also synonymous with procrastination.
On top of all that, people who just wish may not set specific goals either; because they don’t really know what to ask for… or they don’t really know what they want.
Before we can set a specific goal, it’s good to know what that looks like. Compare:
- Deciding you’d like to have a new ladies’ bicycle in pink is a wish.
- Deciding you are going to get that pink, 15.5-inch Dynacraft Women’s 21 Speed Air Blast Bike you saw at your local sports store (regularly $180 but coming on sale next month for $148) is a goal.
The second statement is your specific goal, and it’s is just like a newspaper article: It covers who, what, where, when, how (maybe even why).
- Who: You
- What: A pink, 15.5” Dynacraft Women’s 21 Speed Air Blast Bike
- Where: Your local sporting goods store
- When: The 5th to the 12th of next month!
- Why: You’ve decided it can help you with another goal—losing 20lbs before your daughter’s wedding.
But we’ve missed out a really important field in the info above. Anyone tell me what it is?
Yes, that’s right: How.
How are we going to achieve that goal and get into the habit of manifesting money on a regular basis?
- If you are a ten-year-old girl with an allowance of $10 a week, that’s a huge goal. A little basic arithmetic would show you that you can only raise $40 or $50 in that time period by sticking to the status quo—your only source of cash being your $10 per week allowance.
- If you’re a 30-year-old copywriter, raising the money could be as simple as working all weekend and squeezing in one extra copywriting project.
- If you’re that copywriter, your strategy is barely even a challenge. It’s something you can easily do, and it’s a simple, one-strategy solution: Raise more cash on one project.
If you’re that 10-year-old girl, you’ll have to brainstorm and get creative. You pin a picture of that awesome pink, 15.5” Dynacraft Women’s 21 Speed Air Blast Bike on your wall, just for inspiration. Then you think up extra money-making strategies:
- Babysitting your 6-year-old twin brothers. Uh, no. You’re not old enough. Move on to the next idea.
- Asking your parents to buy the bike. Probably won’t work. They just bought you that Xbox you really wanted for your birthday last month.
Finally, you come up with what you hope is a viable plan for manifesting money in your life!
You…
- Show your mom and dad the picture of the bike and tell them about the sale
- Propose that if you manage to raise $50 from your allowance, and in addition to your regular chores, you do the dishes every day after supper without complaining, they front you the rest, the first day of the sale.
- You point out what great value there is for everyone in this plan. You get the bike of your dreams for a reduced price. You get healthy exercise and they won’t need to complain (as much) about you being stuck in front of your video games. And they get dishes done every day—with a smile.
Of course, parents come in all shapes, sizes and budgets. They still may not say yes. But 10-year-old you would have a much greater chance of a “yes” than if you were just to whine, plead and throw all the burden of purchasing your dream bike onto them.
Remember, your Who, What, Where, When, Why is your GOAL.
Your HOW is your PLAN.
- Who: You. (The bike is for you.)
- What: A pink, 15.5” Dynacraft Women’s 21 Speed Air Blast Bike
- Where: Your local sporting goods store or bicycle shop
- When: The 5th to the 12th of next month!
- Why: You’ve made a commitment to exercise and it can help you with another goal—losing 20lbs before bikini season.
- How: Working all weekend and squeezing in one extra copywriting project before the 5th of next month!
You can use this formula for your big picture and you can also use it for smaller components of your overall goal and plan.
There’s a third reason you can find yourself stuck: One that goes beyond procrastination or wishing or repeating the same thing over and over. You can find yourself stuck simply because you chronically over-complicate things. (This is far more likely to happen if you’re a perfectionist; which a lot of entrepreneurs tend to be. Please trust me when I tell you that manifesting money is a more effective strategy than seeking perfection)
So, keep it simple. Use the easy Goal-Plan formula I’ve just shared. Don’t make goal-setting harder for yourself than it has to be. Let’s quickly recap:
- Goals that are general are really just wishes
- Getting specific breeds focus
- Focus breeds a plan
- Plans breed results
Note that the HOW should include a specific deadline and your WHY is going to be your most powerful motivator – so make sure it’s a ‘why’ that is important to you, as well as to your subscribers and followers.
The wonderful thing about following this little Who, What, Where, When, Why, How formula is that it doesn’t require a specific belief system. It doesn’t require huge amounts of faith on your part. It doesn’t clash with any belief system or religion. It isn’t particularly woo-woo, or only for a Chosen Few: Anyone can do it, without guilt or previous baggage. Manifesting money and more is fun!
Anyone can identify goals in this way. Anyone can set goals this way and work actively towards their goals—with achievable results.
And there’s one last really important point to remember: Having a specific goal will alert you to unexpected, impromptu opportunities for manifesting money along the way: Ones that will help you fast-track achieving your goal. And if you’re not ready, you miss them. Our action habits can lead us to more specific goals.
You will be able to spot these opportunities for what they are, when they happen—and seize them. And sometimes, these unexpected opportunities result in the biggest paradigm shifts of all. And another thing I’ll add here is that sharpening your writing skills will make a huge difference in the success you’ll be able to achieve in every area of your life.
